About Me

Hello and welcome to my page!

My name is Katie Otey and I am an author and a poet. Right now, I mainly write children's books to include Picture Books, Middle Grade, and Young Adult novels. I'm a humorist who  firmly believes in expressing Black joy as much as I can. I  love to write characters of color living life with candor, enjoyment, love. And even when there are struggles  in my stories, you can rest assure that there is also  comic relief to ease the pain.

Although I have been writing for as long as I can remember, I've been an active member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) since 2012 and have served as a Network Representative of the Southern Illinois chapter since 2014. What does that mean? That means I run critique meetings and help other writers hone their work. I love writing. I love reading. I love helping. And I love books!

Another  endeavor of mine is one of independent publisher. It is my goal to work hand in hand with authors and illustrators alike and help them realize their dreams of becoming a published creator as well. I am an active member of the Independent Book Publisher's Association as well as the St. Louis Book Publisher's Association. You can read more about my company, Phoenix Media and Books LLC here.

Okay, I think that's enough for now lest this turn into an autobiography of my entire life.  In any case, I appreciate you reading about me and your support means a great deal. Thank you!
